Can I Really Find A Career In Healthcare Without A Degree?

healthcare professionalsContrary to popular belief, you can pursue a career in healthcare, even if you don’t have a degree. Sure, you won’t be climbing up to the upper echelons of the career i.e. becoming a doctor, but you should be able to gain a pretty decent income for yourself if you work hard. Let’s take a little look at some of the careers that you have at your disposal shall we?

Firstly, it is worth bearing in mind that there are a number of careers out there which don’t actually require a medical degree, but they do require a degree of some description. These can be Medical Administrators, Medical Interpreters, Medical Records etc. You can do a couple of extra years schooling to obtain these lucrative positions, however I find that most employers look towards only awarding the positions to those that have a full degree, and thus they should be avoided if you don’t have one.

I now want to briefly highlight some of the most popular careers in the health care industry which won’t require a medical degree:

  1. The position of a Medical Assistant is one of the most sought after. Mainly because you will be carrying out a few clinical tasks, including assisting physicians when they carry out small operations. In addition to that, you will be working in the office, admitting people to hospital and taking people’s blood pressure. It is a lot of work but the pay is good.
  2. A Home Care Aide, as the name suggests, involves offering home care to the disabled and elderly. This can include feeding them, sorting out their homes to ensure they are clean, shopping and other healthcare tasks.
  3. A Nursing Assistant is another highly sought after position. This will involve working under a nurse to provide patient care, and will involving assessing patients, escorting them, moving supplies and even administering injections when qualified. This as close as you are going to get to true medical procedures without having a degree.
  4. A Psychiatric Aide is similar to a home care aide, although in a mental health hospital. It can be a little bit trying at times, but it does pay a bit more.

Remember, if you are searching for a position in the healthcare industry, you are going to want to gain as much experience as possible first. This means continuing education classes. They can be found in almost every major city, and they aren’t too expensive. Not only are these positions going to look fantastic on your resume, but they will help keep you up to date on the workings of the medical field.

Of course, this is just a quick guide to making it in the healthcare field without a degree. I suggest that you carry out a bit of research into it to find the right position for you. Remember though, these positions are incredibly competitive. You are going to need to work very hard to make it, but I promise you, it can be done.
